According to the Human Rights Watch Turkey committed
"gross violation of its international commitments to respect the laws of war" (1995, p. 7). This included forced displacements, indiscriminate shootings, summary executions, and disguising the identity of perpetrators, as well as violations of international law, including summary execution, torture, forcible displacement of civilians, pillage, destruction of villages, failure to care for civilians displaced by government forces, injury of civilians, destruction of civilian property, inhumane and degrading treatment, kidnaping of civilians to act as porters and as human shields against attack, disappearances, life-threatening conditions of detention and inadequate medical attention leading to death.

During the operations, according to a Turkish parliamentary commission, the armed forces displaced 378,335 villagers while destroying or evacuating 3,428 rural settlements (905 villages and 2,523 hamlets) from the mid-1980s to 1997. These figures are generally treated as underestimations. The Turkish security forces further destroyed the infrastructure of rural life in the Kurdish region, and thus threatened the survival of the Kurds as a distinct people. Kurds on the streets to celebrate Newroz
Karayilan:
''Solution-time has come for Kurdish question''
Newroz, the Kurdish New Year, has been celebrated today in Diyarbakır, Urfa, Mardin, Elazığ, Bingöl, Batman, Şırnak, Siirt, Çukurova.
People took to the streets chanting slogans and calling on the government to act for peace.
Tomorrow in Diyarbakir the 'grand finale'.
Kurdish people in Europe also have celebrated Newroz. Tens of thousand of people met in Dusseldorf. At the march many were the people from Tadort Kurdistan, MLKP, TKİP, TİKB, Antifascist Action, Autonomous Groups, and the left German party Die Linke.
At least 50 thousand people listened to the message from KCK Murat Karayilan who said that "the time has come for Kurdish people to get freedom". Karayilan underlined that "this is solution time for the Kurdish question".

 One million people expected to join Newroz celebration in Istanbul 
The Democratic City Council organizing the Newroz celebration this year says it is expecting 1 million people to attend the 20 March Newroz celebration in Istanbul.
Newroz 2011 is expected to be the most spectacular event of the year for the approximately 5 million Kurds living in Istanbul. This year, the Democratic City Council is organizing the Newroz celebrations, which will be held again at the ‘Newroz field’ in Kazlıçeşme Square in Zeytinburnu. The preparations have been continuing for weeks in 33 districts of Istanbul. The Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Istanbul Branch will provide busses for transportation to the celebration. The celebration will start at 10am. BDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş will make the opening speech and many artists will take the floor.
However, the office of the Governor of Istanbul will seize Newroz holiday posters due to a prohibition decision made by Diyarbakır courts.
Many foreign observers will be join in the Newroz celebrations this year. Celebrations in other cities are also scheduled. In Ankara, preparations for the celebrations have reached their final stage. Also, in the cities of Diyarbakır, Bitlis, Urfa, Şırnak, Muş, Adana, Hakkari, Ağrı, Mardin and their districts, preparations for the Newroz celebration are continuing. Celebrations have lasted until late at night in these places with crowds shouting, ‘freedom, freedom’ in Kurdish, "an azadî an azadî," and fireworks accompanied by folk dancing.
On 20 March in Diyarbakır, visitors with the leaders of the New Cyprus Party will participate in the celebrations.
Labor and Democracy forces held a press conference in the Human Rights Association (İHD) Ankara branch concerning Newroz events on Sunday in Ankara.
The BDP Sur District managers, the municipal council members and the Sur Mayor, Abdullah Demirbaş distributed leaflets inviting citizens to the Newroz celebrations.
Leaflets were also distributed in Yenişehir, Bitli and its districts, and invitations to celebrate the holiday were made in Mardin’s Derik district, Ağrı’s Patnos and Diyadin districts, Hakkari’s Şemdinli and Yüksekova districts. In Urfa the meeting will be held on Monday.
