Sufjan Stevens ( 1/7/1975) is an American singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. He first came to wider recognition with the 2000 album ''A Sun Came'', which was released on the Asthmatic Kitty label he co-founded with his stepfather. He is perhaps best known for his 2005 album ''Illinois'', which hit number one on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, and for the single "Chicago".
Stevens has released albums of varying styles, from the electronica of ''Enjoy Your Rabbit'' and the lo-fi folk of ''Seven Swans'' to the symphonic instrumentation of ''Illinois'' and Christmas-themed ''Songs for Christmas''. Stevens makes use of a variety of instruments, often playing many of them himself on the same recording, and writes music in various time signatures. Though he has repeatedly stated an intent to separate his beliefs from his music, Stevens also freely draws from the Bible and Anglo-Catholic traditions, often incorporating mystical elements into his music.

Ταξίδι με τη ζεστή φωνή του Sufjan Stevens
Ο Sufjan Stevens ανεβαίνει στη σκηνή. Πίσω του το ολιγομελές σχήμα που τον συνοδεύει στη φετινή του περιοδεία. Μπροστά του το κοινό του Αμστερνταμ – ανάμεσα στο κοινό κι εμείς, που ταξιδέψαμε γι’ αυτόν. Πρώτες νότες από το ορχηστρικό «Redford» και ο χρόνος μοιάζει να σταματά. Εχουμε τηλεμεταφερθεί. Είμαστε πλέον στο μελωδικό και βαθύτατα συναισθηματικό σύμπαν του Αμερικανού μουσικού. Από το κοινό, ένα κοινό διαφόρων ηλικιών που δείχνει να έχει επίγνωση του τι ήρθε να ακούσει, επικρατεί απόλυτη σιωπή. Ευλαβική σιωπή. Κανείς δεν τραγουδά, τουλάχιστον όχι τόσο δυνατά ώστε να ακούγεται, κανείς δεν θέλει να ενοχλήσει στο παραμικρό, να μπερδέψει τη φωνή του με αυτήν του Sufjan Stevens, μια φωνή ζεστή, καθαρή, κρυστάλλινη. Κάτι τέτοιο θα ήταν λάθος. Θέλουμε να νιώσουμε την κάθε νότα την κάθε στιγμή. Και επικρατεί η αίσθηση ότι ο Sufjan Stevens τραγουδά για τον καθένα ξεχωριστά. Μόνο με τα χειροκροτήματα ανάμεσα στα τραγούδια ξαφνικά συνειδητοποιούμε ότι υπάρχουν κι άλλοι στον χώρο, ότι δεν είμαστε μόνοι μας στο Koninklijk Theater Carré, σε αυτήν την πολυτελή αίθουσα μουσικής δίπλα στον ποταμό Αμστελ. Στην πραγματικότητα ο χώρος είναι κατάμεστος: η πρώτη μέρα έγινε sold-out και προστέθηκε δεύτερη.
Διάχυση συναισθημάτων
Οι ενορχηστρώσεις είναι άρτιες. Περιστασιακά κάποια νεφελώδη γυναικεία φωνητικά συνοδεύουν. Ο ήχος είναι άψογος. Το συγκρότημα σταθερό, προσηλωμένο. Πλέουμε με μια πνοή χαρμολύπης. Ακούγονται οι πρώτοι στίχοι από το «Death and Dignity»: «Spirit of my silence I can hear you, but I’m afraid to be near you / And I don’t know where to begin» (Πνεύμα της σιωπής μου, μπορώ να σε ακούσω, αλλά φοβάμαι να είμαι κοντά σου / και δεν ξέρω από πού να αρχίσω). Πρόκειται για το εναρκτήριο κομμάτι από τον πρόσφατο εκπληκτικό δίσκο του Stevens, με τίτλο «Carrie & Lowell». Εναν δίσκο τέλειο μέσα στη γλυκιά μελαγχολία του, με αιχμηρή στιχουργική διαύγεια, η οποία εξωτερικεύει τα συναισθήματα του καλλιτέχνη, όταν αυτός έχασε τη μητέρα του. Πιο κάτω στο ίδιο τραγούδι λέει: «I forgive you, mother, I can hear you / and I long to be near you / But every road leads to an end» (Σε συγχωρώ, μητέρα, μπορώ να σε ακούσω / και ποθώ να έρθω δίπλα σου / αλλά κάθε δρόμος οδηγεί σε ένα τέλος). Το κομμάτι που δίνει το όνομα στον δίσκο ερμηνεύεται με μεγαλοπρέπεια, με περισσότερη δυναμική από τη στούντιο ηχογράφηση, μια εκτέλεση πιο πληθωρική. Και σκόρπιες εικόνες από τη σχέση του Stevens με την οικογένειά του γέμισαν τον χώρο. Ενα μουσικό κολάζ από παλιές φωτογραφίες.
Οι στάσεις στον τελευταίο δίσκο είναι πολλές ακόμη –το «Should Have Known Better» συγκινεί, το «Drawn to the Blood» επίσης–, αυτή άλλωστε είναι και η αφορμή της περιοδείας, ωστόσο περνάμε για λίγο από τους indie folk δίσκους «Michigan» (2003) και «Seven Swans» (2004), και διανύουμε το «The Age of ADZ» (2010), έναν δίσκο όπου η folk συναντά την electronica (χαρακτηρίζεται και ως folktronica) και είναι ίσως η πιο πειραματική στιγμή του Stevens.
Οσο τo λάιβ προχωράει, οι απαλές κιθάρες σταδιακά ντύνονται με ηλεκτρισμό, όμως η μετάβαση είναι ομαλή και τόσο αρμονική! Ο φωτισμός, ενώ στην αρχή ήταν χαμηλός, τώρα είναι όλο εκρήξεις. Οδεύουμε ολοταχώς προς την κορύφωση. Τα πανιά μας είναι ανοιχτά. Η Ιθάκη μας θα είναι το «Chicago», το λατρεμένο «Chicago» (κομμάτι από τον εξαιρετικό δίσκο «Illinois» του 2005).
Συνομιλία με τo κοινό
Στο encore μιλάει για πρώτη φορά με το κοινό, είναι απλός και φιλικός, λέει πόσο πολύ αγαπάει τη μουσική, λέει για τη δύναμή της, για το πιστεύω του πως ο κόσμος ξεκίνησε από τους ήχους, και πλέον φοράει καπέλο, όπως στις πρώτες του εμφανίσεις. Θυμόμαστε/γνωρίζουμε κάποια από τα πρώτα του τραγούδια. Και αφήνει το «Chicago» για το τέλος – αλλά είναι γνωστό πως θα γινόταν αυτό. Είναι το τραγούδι της κάθαρσης και οφείλει να ειπωθεί τελευταίο. Η εκδοχή που επιλέγει είναι ακουστική, γαλήνια. Η μελωδία… οι στίχοι… και κάτι μέσα σου φουντώνει. Γιατί είναι το τραγούδι που σε έχει αγγίξει όσο λίγα. Ενα τραγούδι που σε συμφιλιώνει με τον εαυτό σου. Με το παρελθόν, το παρόν, τα όσα σε περιμένουν. Κι όλα αυτά μέσα από ένα εξιλεωτικό road trip. «I drove to New York / In a van with my friend / we slept in parking lots / I don’t mind / I was in love with the place» (Οδήγησα ώς τη Νέα Υόρκη / με ένα βαν με έναν φίλο μου / κοιμόμασταν σε χώρους στάθμευσης / δεν με πειράζει / ήμουν ερωτευμένος με το μέρος). Πόσο ταιριαστό αυτό το τραγούδι στο soundtrack του «Little Miss Sunshine», αυτό το γλυκό road trip movie γι’ αυτήν τη δυσλειτουργική φαμίλια.
Και όταν, εκεί μπροστά σου, o Sufjan Stevens επαναλαμβάνει νοσταλγικά: «I made a lot of mistakes» (έκανα πολλά λάθη), το μυαλό σου ταξιδεύει σε λάθη του παρελθόντος – και νιώθεις πως δεν πειράζει, πως μπορεί να είναι και καλύτερα όπως ήρθαν τα πράγματα. Οπως όταν βάζεις το βινύλιο με το συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι, όπως όταν απρόσμενα το πετυχαίνεις στο ραδιόφωνο, όπως όταν σκόπιμα το αναζητάς στο youtube. Ομως τώρα το ακούς από τον ίδιον τον δημιουργό και αυτό είναι ανατριχιαστικό. Φτερά που ανοίγουν.
Το κομμάτι τελειώνει. Ολοι όρθιοι και χειροκροτούν. Χειροκροτούν ατελείωτα, ευχαριστούν τον καλλιτέχνη γι’ αυτό που τους χάρισε. Χειροκροτούν με την ψυχή τους. Μια ψυχή που ταξίδεψε, μια ψυχή που καθάρισε, έστω και για λίγο. Από ένα road trip: «If I was crying / In the van with my friend / it was for freedom / from myself and from the land» (Αν έκλαιγα στο βαν με τον φίλο μου / ήταν επειδή ένιωθα ελεύθερος / από τον εαυτό μου και από τη γη).
