R óisín Marie Murphy (born 5 July 1973) is an Irish singer-songwriter and record producer, known for her idiosyncratic musical, fashion, and performance styles. Murphy first came to note as one half of the electronic music duo Moloko with her then-boyfriend Mark Brydon . After the two ended their romantic relationship, Murphy embarked on a solo career, releasing her debut solo album, Ruby Blue , written and produced with Matthew Herbert , in 2005. Her second solo album, Overpowered , was released in 2007. Her third album, Hairless Toys was released in 2015. Voice Murphy has a contralto vocal range, which has been described as jazzy. On Moloko's first two albums, Murphy took on an almost narrative vocal style, sounding like she was imitating a number of different people in just one song.
