''You Want It Darker'' received widespread acclaim from music critics. At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream critics, the album received an average score of 94, which indicates "universal acclaim", based on 11 reviews. 

Given the subject matter in its title track, Leonard Cohen's advanced age (82), it's tempting to hear You Want It Darker as a last album. In advance of its release, he even told The New Yorker that he was ready to die, only to walk the comment back later. Whether it is or isn't, You Want It Darker is a hell of a record. Cohen wrote these songs alone and with old friends Sharon Robinson and Patrick Leonard. Son Adamproduced, stepping in while his father was suffering from a severe back injury that required him to sing from a medically designed chair.

Cohen's sepulchral voice expresses a wealth of emotion through its grainy rasp. He remains defiant even while acknowledging failures, regrets, brokenness, and even anger. Redemption arrives, if at all, through unflinching honesty. The title track single is introduced by a choir and a foreboding bassline. Its lyric is as much an indictment of religion as a reflection, personal confession, and doubt. Cantor Gideon Y. Zelermyerengages with the sacred even as Cohen wrestles with it. For every, "Himeni, Himeni/I'm ready my Lord…" there is a counter: "...Magnified and sanctified/Be thy Holy Name/Vilified and crucified/In the human frame/A million candles burning/For the help that never came…." In the final verse he asserts: "If you are the dealer/I want out of this game," but he's answered by Zelermyer's and the choir's resolute devotion. "Treaty" recalls the melody of "Anthem" as piano, synth strings, and chorale highlight the poignancy in the lyric. Cohenequates past hopes and perceived truths with his guilt: "We sold ourselves for love but now we're free/I'm sorry for the ghost I made you be…." "Leaving the Table" is a bittersweet country waltz where Cohenreveals things he no longer needs (even if he wishes he did), and underscores impending exit: "I don't need a pardon/There's no one left to blame/I'm leaving the table/I'm out of the game." The intersection of the blues, Yiddish folk, and gypsy musics on "Traveling Light" flows through bouzoukis, mandolins, and drum loops. Their union recalls the haunted musical qualities on 1984's Various Positions.

In song after song, Cohen delivers lyric juxtapositions that settle scores with God, past lovers, and himself. He sounds like a spent Jeremiah muttering to himself and arguing with his creator in a cave rather than the biblical one transported to heaven in a fiery chariot of victory. But even after all this, Cohen can't quite give up the ghost. The tender stringed reprise of "Treaty" closes the set with a faint -- and perhaps desperate -- twinge of hope: "I wish there was a treaty/between your love and mine." Despite his long list of gripes, sins, and losses, Cohen's instinctive opening to whatever light remains prevails on You Want It Darker. When all contradictions are nakedly exposed in truth, all one can do is embrace them and wish for the best. Brilliant.

Leonard Cohen's You Want It Darker is a bleak masterpiece – review

Leonard Cohen’s 14th studio album is a bleak masterpiece for hard times from pop’s longest-serving poet. At 82 years old, what  is truly extraordinary about Cohen is not that he is still making albums but that they are as rich, deep and potent as ever. If anything, his ruminations on life gain added poignancy and urgency with passing time.

Something between defeat and defiance has crept into his tone, which has dropped to a half-spoken bass whisper, a grumble and sigh filtered through a weary frailty that makes his pearly couplets shine even brighter.

The musical setting, by Cohen’s talented singer-songwriting son Adam, is perfection, an organic bed of elegantly twanging guitar lines, humming organ, melancholy piano and aching violin, following stately chord progressions framed by the warm, female vocal harmonies that have become a Cohen trademark.

For someone not previously prolific (from 1980 to 2010 he made just five albums), this is Cohen’s third album in five years. “I am ready to die,   Cohen recently told the New Yorker  and it can be tempting to read intimations of mortality into all his late work, although the truth is Cohen has never shied from the ultimate issues.

There is a sense of accounts being settled on Leaving The Table, and preparations for a final exit being made on Travelling Light. The old ladies man even wryly turns his back on sexual temptation with On The Level, regretfully confessing “I don’t need a lover/ That wretched beast is tamed.”

But this is an album with things to say about modern life as well as death. The most compelling songs have a state of the nation sweep, in particular addressing failures of religions that preach love but deliver conflict. The title track, propelled by a threatening bass figure, is delivered as a statement not a question, fuelled by a deep pessimism only leavened by empathy for the downtrodden and Cohen’s pitch black wit.

Judeo-Christian imagery runs throughout but Cohen’s figure of Jesus has let everyone down (“Vilified and crucified in the human frame/ A million candles burning for the help that never came”). The mournful Treaty revisits the martial melody of satirical 1992 classic Democracy in a world weary spirit anticipating little possible accord between opposing beliefs (“Born Again is born without a skin/ The poison enters into everything”). Steer Your Way offers an epic and terrible farewell to earthly concerns, in which Cohen prepares to shed even such core beliefs as “fundamental goodness and the wisdom of the way” to face a universal reckoning (“please don’t make me go there/ though there be a God or not”).

I am not sure it could get any darker than this but there is redemptive beauty to be found in someone facing the inevitable with defiant humanity.

 - Πέντε τραγούδια του Λέοναρντ Κοέν και οι ιστορίες τους

Ο θάνατος του Λέοναρντ Κοέν μοιάζει με φάρσα. Ήταν κάτι λιγότερο από ένα μήνα πριν, όταν δημοσιεύτηκε μια μεγάλη συνέντευξη-προφίλ στο περιοδικό New Yorkerμε αφορμή το καινούργιο του άλμπουμ You want it Darker. Εκεί, ο Καναδός τραγουδοποιός, μεταξύ άλλων, έλεγε πως είναι έτοιμος να «φύγει». Ίσως, όπως έγραψε κάποιος, το μόνο παρήγορο σε αυτήν την τόσο σημαντική καλλιτεχνική απώλεια του «καταραμένου 2016», να ήταν πως o ίδιος είχε συμφιλιωθεί με τον θάνατο. Εάν ήταν κάτι που έκανε τον Κοέν να ξεχωρίζει ήταν οι στίχοι του, αυτός ο απίστευτος χειροποίητος κόσμος που ζωντάνευε σε κάθε τραγούδι του. Αυτές είναι πέντε ιστορίες για πέντε από τα σημαντικότερα τραγούδια του.


My Life

Τραγούδι από το πρώτο του άλμπουμ Songs of Leonard Cohen, αφιερωμένο στο μεγάλο έρωτα της ζωής του την Noρβηγίδα Marianne Jensen. Γνωρίστηκαν στην Ύδρα κι έμειναν μαζί για περίπου μια δεκαετία, ζώντας μεταξύ Μοντρέαλ, Νέας Υόρκης και Ύδρας. Θα πρέπει κανείς να έχει καρδιά από πέτρα για να μη λυγίσει με το αποχαιρετιστήριο του γράμμα προς τη Μάριαν, που πέθανε τον Ιούλιο που μας πέρασε. «Να γνωρίζεις», έγραφε, «πως είμαι τόσο κοντά σου, που αν τεντώσεις το χέρι σου θα μπορέσεις σχεδόν να πιάσεις το δικό μου».
Η έκπληξη εδώ δεν είναι ότι υπήρξε στ' αλήθεια η Suzanne, αλλά το ότι ενώ οι στίχοι είναι βιογραφικοί, και το τραγούδι ακούγεται περίπου σαν ερωτικός ύμνος, στην πραγματικότητα ο Κοέν και η ηρωίδα του τραγουδιού Suzanne Verdal ήταν απλώς φίλοι. Η Verdal, πρώην χορεύτρια και χορογράφος και σύζυγος του γλύπτη Armand Vaillancourt, συχνά τον προσκαλούσε στο σπίτι της κοντά στο παλιό λιμάνι του Μοντρεάλ. Η ίδια παραδέχτηκε ότι πιθανώς να υπήρχε έλξη μεταξύ τους, αλλά θεωρούσε ότι η σχέση τους ήταν τόσο ισχυρή πνευματικά που αν γινόταν κάτι ερωτικό «θα χάλαγε». Παρά το γεγονός ότι η Suzanne μάλλον δεν υπέκυψε, το τραγούδι είναι από τα πιο ερωτικά του. Κάποτε, σε ένα σχόλιο κάτω από μια βιντεοσκοπημένη ερμηνεία του τραγουδιού στο youtube, κάποιος έγραψε: «Ώρα να αποσυρθείς Λέοναρντ. Μας τρως τις γυναίκες».

To Βird on the wire ή Bird on a Wire, (ο τίτλος άλλαξε καθώς πέρασαν τα χρόνια), είναι από τα διασημότερα τραγούδια του Κόεν. «Το τραγούδι το ξεκίνησα στην Ελλάδα», έλεγε. «Εκείνη την εποχή στην Ύδρα δεν υπήρχαν καλώδια τηλεφώνου, ούτε ηλεκτρισμός. Τώρα πια δεν θα το προσέχαμε καν, αλλά όταν βάλανε τους πρώτους στύλους της ΔΕΗ στην Ύδρα το μόνο που έκανα ήταν να κοιτάζω τα καλώδια έξω από το παράθυρο μου και να σκέφτομαι πώς ο πολιτισμός με είχε προφτάσει και δεν θα του ξέφευγα όπως είχα πιστέψει. Δεν θα ζούσα αυτή τη ζωή του 11ου αιώνα, που νόμιζα ότι είχα βρει για τον εαυτό μου. Αυτή ήταν η αρχή του τραγουδιού. Στη συνέχεια, φυσικά παρατήρησα ότι τα πουλιά έκατσαν στα καλώδια και κάπως έτσι ξεκίνησα να γράφω». Το Bird on a Wire τραγούδησε υπέροχα και ο Johnny Cash.

 Τραγούδι - αριστούργημα από το άλμπουμ Songs of Love and Hate, το οποίο μοιάζει να έχει γραφτεί για ένα ερωτικό τρίγωνο. Σύμφωνα με τις σημειώσεις του Κοέν όμως, το παλτό ήταν δικό του, και δεν ανήκε σε κάποιον άλλον άντρα. Επίσης το τραγούδι έχει και μία μοναδική αναφορά στη σχέση του τραγουδοποιού με τη Σαϊεντολογία. Σύμφωνα με (μη επιβεβαιωμένες) πληροφορίες ο Κοέν ήταν για πολύ μικρό χρονικό διάστημα, μέλος της Εκκλησίας της Σαϊεντολογίας γιατί έτσι «μπορούσε να γνωρίζει γυναίκες». Ο δε στίχος «Did you ever Go Clear», αναφέρεται στο A state of clear της Σαϊεντολογίας.

Στις παλιές του συναυλίες, ο Κοέν εξηγούσε πώς το τραγούδι μιλούσε για την συνάντηση του με την Τζάνις Τζόπλιν στο Chelsea Hotel, το θρυλικό «καλλιτεχνικό» ξενοδοχείο της Νέας Υόρκης από τη δεκαετία του '70 και μετά. Tα πρώτα χρόνια του άρεσε να διηγείται στις συναυλίες του. πως συναντήθηκαν στο ασανσέρ: «Μάζεψα όλο το κουράγιο που είχα» διηγήθηκε εκείνος. «Της είπα ψάχνεις για κάποιον;». Εκείνη απάντησε «Ναι ψάχνω για τον Κρις Κριστόφερσον» «Είσαι τυχερή» της είπα «Εγώ είμαι ο Κρις Κριστόφερσον». Χρόνια μετά, ο ίδιος μίλησε για το πόσο μετάνιωσε που όλα αυτά τα χρόνια μιλούσε ανοιχτά για την ερωτική τους συνεύρεση. «Ήταν η μόνη αδιακρισία της επαγγελματικής μου ζωής» δήλωσε στο BBC το 1984, διευκρινίζοντας ότι επειδή το τραγούδι περιείχε μια λεπτομερή περιγραφή σεξουαλικής πράξης, η αναφορά στο όνομα της ήταν λάθος.
